Radiant Barrier Insulation Usage

Installing radiant barrier insulation is a lot easier than you might think. With a few easy steps, you will be on your way to reducing your electric bill and saving money.

Aluminum is usually the reflective material that is placed on some sort of flat sheet. Most commonly they are made of cardboard or flat plywood. You can find these materials at your local hardware store. The people that work there will be able to guide you to everything you need to start your environmentally friendly project.

If your home is already built, the radiant barrier insulation should be placed on the attic floor, over the already existing insulation. Take careful precaution to make sure the radiant barrier insulation is not touching the insulation that is already in place. This would not allow for dead air space, letting heat inside in the summer and out in the winter. The reflective side should always be facing the open air space.

When you are making your own radiant barrier insulation, the foil that you use to cover your flat sheet of material needs to have a reflectivity of 90%. One thing that can make your radiant barrier less effective is dust build up. This occurs when you have the barrier placed on the attic floor. If you have dust build up, the barrier will absorb the heat instead of reflecting it.

The other types of installation for radiant barrier insulation are mainly used on new homes. The insulation can be installed in the walls of the home or on the roof of the house, underneath the roof deck. Both of these are highly effective in reducing your home's energy usage. If you are going to have a contractor install the radiant barrier project in your home, you will have to spend a bit extra than if you installed it yourself. The barrier can be installed, including materials, for around 12-35 cents per square foot. This is still a great price for the amount of energy you will be saving.
